Interesting talk going on here. I relate to much of what is being said below 
and would just like to add that when working with microsonic source material 
it has sometimes served me well to think of form as growing of the material 
itself (alluded to below). If you take a single phrase or sonic element and 
aurally analyze it for inherent characteristics you can often come up with 
scenairos which are just amplifications or free associations derived from 
these characteristics and thus provide a piece with an organic relationships 
between its parts. I always like to use my ear and repeated listenings to 
empirically test the cohesion as I go along.
