Perhaps I was trying to be overly aphoristic.
What I meant to express was more along the "many roads up the
mountain" point of view. As an artist you can choose to use any of a
variety of methods, and the language and procedures can be chosen to
best investigate or express some particular thing. This much can be
considered arbitrary (as long as you accept that by making a
particular choice the artists is being "true" to him/herself and to
the goal of the piece). But what is crucial is that it be done well
and in a manner that maximizes the effectiveness of the art work.
That is to say, it doesn't matter so much WHAT you do as an artist,
but it matters a whole lot HOW you do it.
