Artists Profiles

WARMDESK:
http://aposteriori.org/wdsk.html

Warmdesk is the project of chicago-based producer William Selman. The sound
of Warmdesk has evolved from his earliest work of musique concrete and
skewed rhythms into combining these elements into stripped-down minimal
techno. Still present are the dubby textures and samples from everyday life,
but now they coexist with smooth chords and rhythmic grooves. The desire is
to create a multi-faceted "spray" of sound grounded by a pulse of beats and
concrete sounds. Formerly a drummer, Selman's strategy is to allow rhythm to
intuitively develop through repetition instead of the current obsession with
changing its timbre and structure every measure.

Warmdesk has released material on several labels, including deluxe, bip-hop,
static caravan and fallt. He has just released the "guero variations" cd for
the well-regarded deluxe label (home of electric birds, blechtum from
blechdom and matmos's early endeavors). The record is composed almost
completely with sounds from the piano without actually playing the keys and
according to the portland mercury's Dave Segal, it "makes musique concrete
detritus shimmy and shake with glee." He is about to release a 12" on his
own label with remixes by Stephan Mathieu and Ulrich Troyer. He is also
working on a collaborative project of unapologetic dancefloor cut-and-paste
with Forte Record's Matt Mercer. Selman is currently completing a master's
degree in computer science.

ARK & SETY: (*content taken from Ark web site)
http://www.djouls.com/ark/

Ark is the artist who first brought the minimal style to many French. As
soon as 1997 he issues on the Brif label "Siderurgie esthétique" and "De
derrière les fagots", two EPs which were not much f a great success... It's
logical, Ark is a precurssor, always light years ahead of his time.) (But he
doesn't loose faith in his craft for that, and collaborates in 1999 with
Herbert (UK) and Losoul (GER) on "Belle lurette". Everyone got skeptic
listening to this new music and yet, as today Losoul or Herbert have became
stars of the genre, they discover the sound of Ark!

ZYGOTE: (Prepared Audio)
http://www.bayimproviser.com/StephenRuiz

Stephen Ruiz (aka Zygote) uses the mechanized process of electronic music
production and combines the expression of complex human feelings to create
sound art. The tools of his output are computers, tape recorders, wires and
other conduits of noise. His sound transcends the inhuman element of
"technologically enhanced" production methods so vital in the world of
electronic music producers, and in it's place submits raw and unfiltered
emotion. While exploring the idea of personal expression through the cold
exterior of machines, he takes the concepts of compositional indeterminacy,
generative music and evolving cellular automata and humanizes them. The end
result is populist music of emotional depth that illicits response via
technology. Having trained in percussion and guitar, his compositional
methods are rooted in structured narrative that are constantly being mutated
under the pressure of new forms of expression.

Stephen has releases on Under the Radar Records and Alectric Records
(Canada) and is the founding organizer of The "Under the Radar" experimental
music and video events in San Francisco.

TWO YEARS AND RUNNING

Julip: 839 Geary (between Hyde and Larkin)

u.t.r.// 2 year anniversary event

DAT POLITICS:
Dat politics flash by the way of music but also texts some pixellised and
pop snapshot focused on failed flirt and gastronomy, After work with
innovative and respectable labels as A-musik, Mille Plateaux, Skipp or
Tigerbeat6, now the laptop-band collaborates with the electro-trash label
from the Berlin-based trio Chicks On Speed to diffuse their domestic and
terribly exotic new sonic adventures.

BLEVIN BLECHDOM:
Blevin Blectum - nee Bevin Kelley - one-third of Sagan, ex-d84 and formerly
50% of Blectum From Blechdom. Currently Blevin plays solo and in Sagan (with
fellow musician J Lesser and video artist Ryan Junell). Her first solo CD
was released on Phthalo in 1999. Her second solo CD Talon Slalom was
released May 2002 on Seattle's Deluxe Records. She makes electronic music
with samplers and computers mostly.

LESSER:
Starting off with the templates of drum and bass but tweeking them beyond
recognition, Lesser's music delivers crunchy snares and overdriven bass
frequencies with a heaping helping of skeptical humor, gritty digital noise,
and DIY instrument-building ingenuity. Soldering together new instruments
out of the refuse of 80's mixers and synths, J Lesser avoids the standard
sounds and strategies in favor of a confrontational, schizophrenic and often
hilarious rethinking of conventional "intelligent: electronic dance music.

Lance Grabmiller
Born in Kansas City , Missouri in 1975. Studied viola, cello, alto
saxophone, tenor saxophone and music composition (in that order) before
putting all formal studies on hold with the discovery of his first four
track tape recorder at the age of 14. Using various tapes, effects, objects,
microphones, amplifiers, razor blades and any instruments that could be
begged or borrowed, he created quite a din in the Midwest, most notably in
his collaborations with Shannon Fields which included such bands as Alice's
Offspring, Requiem (which included a revolving cast of dozens) and HSoA
(with Martin Nieznanski), the last of which culminated in a gigantic
performance noise nightmare that nearly destroyed the Gizmo in Galesburg, IL
in 1994.

Co-organizer of the Under the Radar events.

DJ PERFORMANCES:

Wobbly:
Wobbly is a multi-talented artist who excels in music, painting, singing,
writing, dancing and even woodworking. Once dubbed "Mr. High on Life", his
colorful high energy is like electricity as it provokes intense emotion in
his audience.

Wobbly is practical and youthful. He possesses charisma and magnetism. He's
been a natural artist since early youth, but has restrained himself until
recently, as his creative drive is pushing him to give to the world what
lies inside of him. He developed himself as a portrait painter. This year,
he's gone beyond that as he fulfills his philosophical nature in the avenue
of music, writing and singing. He wants to live a long life and be creative.
His fulfillment will not come until he's completed the full cycle of his
inborn talent. His high creativity in all areas has funneled into music
where he finds himself at this time, with his artistic ability as a painter
having a profound effect. It appears as if his painting background shows up
in his music as he paints pictures with his words. His broad background is
embraced in his inspired voice.
