Re: [microsound] Re: funding in canada & cultural globalization
oi Ned + list,
As I am writing an article on this, and have permission for this quote, here
is a direct response from CC in response to S1E's attempts to secure travel
funding for Toronto techno producer Jeremy Caulfield. Note the following
quote: "but I am confident in saying that techno and house is very unlikely
to be funded by the Council."
--- .---
[CCA Rep Googles Jeremy]
Found the following description:
"One of Toronto's most prolific and popular techno and tech house DJs,
Jeremy Caulfield was instrumental in developing the cities rich techno and
deep house scene in the mid to late nineties. His debut for Trapez is two
ultra funky, tight tech-house movements. Hard and minimal, but melodic and
bouncy, too, Caulfield's precise loops have much in common with older
Detroit techno and Chicago house, but his sonic palette is more akin to the
Cologne sound."
Frankly, we just aren't going there right now, and may not ever end up
funding in this area. As you know, this is new territory for the Canada
Council and we are educating ourselves, but I am confident in saying that
techno and house is very unlikely to be funded by the Council. I really
believe this is the domain of our colleagues at FACTOR.
--.---
Proof is in the pudding.
I'd like to know who, *exactly who*, at the CCA, supports electronic music.
Names and numbers. Because all experience here tells the opposite, and I
think it's time to start publicizing the framework of this funding and what
amounts to its failure for an entire generation of artists. If there's money
flowing out .. who / what / when / where ? I'm not looking to disagree for
the spite of it, but would like to see evidence of any positive moves for
accomodation beyond the rhetoric put forward at the Mutek 2002 panel.
best,
tobias
