(OT) slow friday the 13th

Kate sat, poised like a buddhist statue, on the edge of the hilltop
overlooking the river. The wind was not too steady, like the airflow from an
oscilating fan. The chilly air bringing that sense of nostalgia, that autumn
smell taking her to her childhood.  The winters on Mobile bay. Her father
smoking Indian cigarettes and helping her pull the crab traps from the dark
green-brown water.  She sighed, and pulled the Marlboro from behind her ear
and put it to her thin lips. Her addiction tugged her from her moment of
stillness and she dug furiously through her purse for the tarnished silver
lighter she'd bought on her senior trip to Paris.

The autumn smell disappeared as the Marlboro sent a ribbon of smoke into the
line of trees above the hill. Clouds to join there whispy bretheren in the
red of the sunset.  She smiled as she expelled her first drag.  The
Marlboro's made her feel free....autonomous. She knew they could kill her
and yet she chose to smoke anyway; it had been her choice and bad or good
she chose them.  They were like Tommy.

The stillness of nostalgia returned, a daydream.  She'd met Tommy at a party
at Rachel's. Two introverts alone on the back porch steps.

They'd talked, sort of, and left the party early together to seek out a
quieter place to just sit and "talk". Actually they didn't do much talking.
Just quick smiles and short glances while the other wasn't looking.

"Kate" Rachel broke her concentration "wake up!" she laughed running her
hand back and forth through Kate's line of site like someone checking a
motion sensor. God, Kate hated that. Everyone always insisted on breaking
the quiet beautiful moments of concentration.  It was like society hated
quiet people, the masses conditioned to think them dangerous.

"Sorry, I didn't see you come up" Kate sighed.

"You okay?" Rachel asked.

"Yeah"

"I thought you quit," Rachel said eyeing the cigarette.

"I tried, but I like it"
