CD Skipping

Hi Everyone,
 
I've got a really obvious question, but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere:
 
What exactly causes the 'ticking' sound when a CD starts skipping?
 
Is it coming from the audio on the disc or is it from the CD player?
 
Sorry if this question has been asked and answered lots of times, but I feel it's such an important sound, I'd really like to know what it is and how the sound is generated.
