heres my story:

no technical training. wrote grants for art projects. got money. 
managed the projects. did graphic design and print production in the 
heyday of desktop publishing. ran a printing press. fixed VW's. did 
sound for punk bands in the 80's. turned print pieces into web pieces 
in 94. started an internet radio station in 96.

now i work in the IT department of a big natural and organic foods 
retailer, building supply chain portals and database publishing 
systems.

go figure.
