i use linux and windows both. 

with linux, i need to spend more time with the tools- making them work
with each other and the soundcard and the system in general. all the
loose ends are there for you to play with [or break!].

with windows, it's more likely to 'just work' but i have less freedom
there [to experiment].

the new macOS is BSD unix- not too far off from linux, so you may be
close to being there already. i think you can install it on a pc if you
want [darwin]:
http://developer.apple.com/darwin/projects/darwin/

but it may be too geeky, and may not run the stuff you already use on
the mac, but it might also be an easy transition into unix.
