Yes you're wrong :)  I think alex's idea is perfect because it works against 
the impulse to collect, consume and horde that drives record collectors and 
mp3 swappers.  At best imagine listening to an amazing piece of music with 
the knowledge that you'll never hear it again.  I think that would be a very 
interesting state of listening that's arguably lost from live performances 
now that everything seems to be documented.  The project should bring about 
an awareness of self-control in the listener.  There is nothing to stop 
someone from copying, distributing mp3s, or just keeping the CD forever but 
somehow the presentation of the CD should encourage the listener to enter 
into the spirit of the project.  Of course the cynic in me thinks all of 
this changes if the music isn't worth listening to more than once ;)
