This reminds me of Mail Art, in which artists
worldwide exchange their art through the mail usually
based on themed projects. There have been many
projects involving sound, but I do not know too many
"musicians" (people whose primary artistic activity is
sound-based) who are involved with Mail Art, although
many projects fit the loose definition of Mail Art,
especially projects where a cassette is passed from
person to person, each adding a sound or song, and of
course current projects that utilize the web.

The Mail Art projects I enjoy best are the "assembly
zines," in which a call is put out for x
copies/versions of a certain size. Then, each
submitter gets 1 copy each work, sometimes stapled
together, sometimes loose in an envelope. The
possibilities are endless, and limited only by what
the various post offices around the world will allow
to be sent (and there have been some very funny
projects to test exactly what these limits are).

There is an entire artistic world of people who are
very passionate about Mail Art, but because there is
rarely ever a commodity to be sold as a finished
product, I don't think many people ever get a chance
to find out about it. Do yourself a favor and do a web
search on "Mail Art." Many people are placing their
calls for participation and their documentation
online.

There are no rules and nearly infinite possibilites,
and you've probably already been engaging in
activities that are Mail Art in some way or another...
