as a listener i like to feel that a composer has enriched my life
rather than stolen from it. unless their stuff sucks of course (and i
am usually quite forgiving).
as a composer i prefer to think of my music-creating as having more
in common with the concept of the "potlatch".

Phil: True enough. I kind of wondered whether or not there was an
untranslatable pun going on. In French "voler", if I recall, is the word
for both "steal" and "fly". Perhaps Murail was suggesting that the
composer can both steal and give flight to the life of the listener. But
that's just a hopeful theory.

just because one continues to "search for new ideas and materials"
doesn't mean they are actually there.
there is also this assumption that our culture is NOT dead... which
culture? whose culture? the avant-garde of what? i think the concept
of an avant-garde is very euro-centric to begin with, as if there
were only one valid cultural strand, and that some subset of humans,
so-called "avant-gardists" were somehow at the forefront of it all...

Phil: Yes, that's the usual understanding of the avant-garde. But I'm
interested in an avant-garde that's concatenatory rather than
subsumptive: one that simply adds new "percepts" (is my Deleuzian streak
showing?) to the available field, rather than attempting to replace or
destroy all that has gone before; a provisional and humble avant-garde.
