Another option for DivX .avi files:

I use DivXDoctorII (free) to convert the .avi files to .mov files and 
open them with QuickTime with the 3ivx (free) plugin. I always get 
perfect audio quality following this path, while with VLC the audio 
track is  usually a bit damaged.
