the zeppelin design creating dead air around the mic seems to keep
direct action on the membrane to an minimum. many homemade designs
are out there on the web. cut out pvc pipe, fake fur, nylon hose,
wire strainers, no need to buy one, the cheap materials work fine.
The sound of wind is one of the hardest experiences to record because
the ears have such a large role. I try to figure out exactly what
object it is that is interacting with the moving air and
vibrating/whistling and mic that as close as possible but out of the
moving air path. Objects like power lines or fence wires, grass,
leaves are some more common ones. For the cliche movie effect, try
close micing the crack in slightly opened window. natural wind is
one of the great recording challenges, If the conditions are right,
experiment like crazy, you never know what will translate. Rob D.
