Re: [microsound] 12k = HAPPY

My tastes are diverse as well, and for the past few years, I too have got
much amusement and have garnered a mild fascination with j-pop as a fun
(albeit) "guilty pleasure". I had been listening to various sorts of
"silly" music from Anime films, some of the more mainstream "cutesy"
fare, others like Kahimi Karie, as well as the strange music like Jon (&
Utsunomia).
Although, I have to admit upon first seeing the new 12k offshoot the day
before yesterday, I had mixed reactions. First, we saw the relatively
well known Mego jumping on this phenomena, and now another relatively
well known experimental label jumping on what has become the popular
trend of *cuteness*, especially that of which has been pouring forth in
abundance from Japan over the past few years. Even before viewing the
"artists" page, I knew exactly what kind of photo was going to be staring
back at me, and sure enough, there was yet another *cute Japanese girl*
(add trademark here) giving the camera a pseudo-innocent "what me
marketable?" kind of stare.
Ok, no one needs to tell me that I'm being a wet blanket on the launching
of this new label. I'm fully aware of that. I do wish Taylor the best of
luck in making this a solid label with *compelling* work. However I must
also admit that all of this "cutesy-cutesy, happy-happy" trend-laden
cartoony stuff was already beginning to wear mighty thin with me over the
past few months, and now I that I'm witnessing the advent of yet another
addition to this "movement", I can't help but to cringe a little bit
more. Ok, my confessional is over. ;o)
happy happy, Dale
