framework - phonography/field recording; contextual and decontextualized =
sound activity
presented by patrick mcginley

two particularly interesting projects this edition, amongst plenty of =
other great sounds and a great nyc intro by gen ken montgomery. the =
first is a 3" disc of sounds recorded by rachel thompson and jonathan =
zorn as part of a project called 50 sound stories + 466 decibel =
readings. the final product is a 2-sided map of the twin cities - st =
paul and minneapolis, minnesota - one side of which locates 50 selected =
favorite local sounds (20 if which make up the cd) and tells their =
stories (and even suggests a number of potential 'soundwalks'), and the =
other side of which maps the cities in terms of their relative decibel =
readings taken throughout a grid of their geographies. the map is part =
of a series of 'knowledge maps' commissioned by the university of =
minnesota design institute as part of its twin cities design celebration =
2003. a fantastic project, great package, and really nice sounds to =
boot!

the second project we featured was one of a series of radio-specific =
pieces by american sound artist steve peters (whose book and cd =
here-ings we featured earlier this year) called sight specifics, in =
which he invites people to 'choose a site they'd like to visit and have =
them go their and record themselves describing that place, speaking in =
any style of language they choose. i usually then go there at another =
time to make my own field recordings, which may or may not be =
electronically processed. then i combine those sounds with their edited =
speaking to make an audio translation of the visual and emotional =
experience of that place as filtered through the perception of the =
participants.'

one more thing: it has come to my attention that one or two packages =
sent to me over the past few months have disappeared in the post (a =
problem undoubtedly exacerbated by the current postal strikes here in =
the uk). i am very careful to always contact people who have taken the =
effort to send something in, even if i can't use the material or won't =
be able to fit it into a show for quite some time, just to let them know =
their package has arrived safely. if you've sent something and haven't =
heard from me, please don't think it's been chucked in some pile in the =
corner and will never be heard of again, but contact me and let me know, =
and i can start hassling local post offices. things usually don't =
completely disappear without a trace, but we do get a lot of mail and =
some things do go missing...

again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw =
field recordings, field recording based composition or introduction =
submissions (details below). send material, released or not, on any =
format, to the address below. we are also hoping to have live =
performances as often as possible, so if you are in or passing through =
london please get in touch!=20
