Hello all. It's been a little while since the last Opsound Newsletter
but we've been busy collecting music for your listening enjoyment and
planning for the first physical releases on the Opsound label. Our
friends at Creative Commons have also been up to some interesting
things, including featuring Opsound artists and working with the
Internet Archive to offer free hosting of sound files.

NEWS FROM OUR FRIENDS: GNOMORADIO

An exciting announcement from some like spirits at gnomoradio.org:

The Gnomoradio project intends to create an online network where
artists can promote and share their music freely and willingly. By
eliminating many of the exclusionary tactics of the mainstream music
industry, musicians will have a chance to interact directly with their
listeners and receive valuable exposure. The first step of this process
is to develop a program that can find, fetch, and play music that is
legally available in the public domain or under one of many free
licenses.

Gnomoradio itself is free software, available under the terms of the
GNU General Public License. It currently runs on GNU/Linux and other
UNIX-compatible systems. The short-term goals of the project include
continuing the development of the music player, porting it to all
popular operating systems, and establishing a community of musicians
who wish to harness the power of the peer to peer file transfer to
legally promote their music on the internet.

For more information, the initial announcement of the Gnomoradio
project can be found here.

http://gnomoradio.org/announcement.php

If you are an artist interested in using Gnomoradio to promote your
music, there is an online form to put your music on Gnomoradio using a
Creative Commons license. For now, we would recommend that you join the
gnomoradio-artists mailing list.

If you are interested in developing, testing, or using Gnomoradio, CVS
snapshots are available for download. A developer's mailing list is
also available, as well as a user's mailing list.

CALL TO ARTISTS AND MUSICIANS FOR THE OPEN POOL (ONGOING)

Musicians and sound artists of all kinds are invited to join the
Opsound project.

Opsound is a record label using an open source, copyleft model, an
experiment in practical gift economics, a laboratory for new ways of
releasing music.

In its first phase of operation, Opsound is gathering material for an
open sound pool which will be drawn on for the creation of a series of
online and real-world microlabels. All material for the sound pool will
be released under a Creative Commons license (the
"Attribution-ShareAlike license"), a copyleft license in the spirit of
open source software license which allows for all kinds of copying,
remixing, use, and reuse while retaining an attribution to the original
artist.

Anyone is encouraged to contribute sound files to the open sound pool,
including field recordings, ambiences, incomplete improvisations,
monologues & dialogues, unfinished experiments, detached soundtracks,
vocal solos, strange noises, bedroom laptop, microsound, generative,
glitch dub, idm, minimal techno, blip hop, hip hop, turntablist,
downtempo, uptempo, reggae, ragga, raga, roots, breakbeat, basement
punk, garage band, indy, shoegazer, psychedelia, noise, song, be-bop,
free jazz, modern composition, avant-anything, etc. Sound files can be
complete pieces of music, or elements intended be combined into
something new.

DEADLINE: There is currently no deadline, and entries will be accepted
on an ongoing basis. You are, however, encouraged to enter your
material as soon as is conveniently possible.

HOW TO ENTER: Visit the website at http://www.opsound.org, Please read
