Re: microsound Digest 15 Nov 2003 Re: NOISE
How to distinguish good noise from just bad noise?
A skilled noisecian knows when to STOP.
A novice will just go on and on.
"Popular" music usually has 2 elements that make it
socially acceptable: you can dance to it or hum/sing
along. Noise usually explores other aspects of the
sonic spectrum other than just rhythm and melody.
Think of how abstract and non objective painting
explores textures, colors, space etc, and try to
approach noise music with this in mind. Since music is
the most abstract of arts, it is harder to "grasp"
when it does not have the big mama heartbeat or you
can't name that tune in 3 notes.
or think of this example: hitting the reply button and
not editing your post and leaving a long scrolling
trail is BAD NOISE while editing your post and leaving
only what is relevant is GOOD NOISE. ;)
