7econds - a microsound project - Deadline: Jan 1st 2004
========================================

I am currently reading an interesting book titled 'Media Unlimited' by Todd
Gitlin in which he describes how the average length of time needed today to
comprehend new information is now approx. seven seconds...this is the reason
why sound bites heard on TV and radio fit into this time frame...
so I thought it would be an interesting task to create sound works that also
fit within this time frame...

so here is a new microsound project:
- create a piece that is NO LONGER than seven seconds in length
- there should a strong structural element (i.e., A-B-A, A-B-B-A, A-B-C-A,
etc)...(it can be layered as well...for example: one layer consists of one
sort of structure and another consists of a different one)
- the piece should NOT be monochromatic (i.e., it should use different types
of sounds)

general guidelines:
==============

- only one (1) piece per list member

- the piece should be no longer than seven (7) seconds

- upload finished work to the microsound hotline server for others to hear
and remember to announce to the list when you have uploaded the piece

[microsound hotline server: microsound.synthesizer.org
also, see http://www.bigredh.com for downloading a PC/MacOS hotline client]

***IMPORTANT *** - if you don't already have a password to the microsound
server you must FIRST get a password from me to upload and download files
from the server and you have to be a list member in order to get this pswd

again, this invite is to microsound list members ONLY

*put your piece here -> path: "Uploads/Seven/myFolder"
- remember to name your folder something unique and not 'myFolder'
- oh yeah, please make your folder a 'drop box' by naming it like this:
'myFolderName drop box'
and NOT 'myFolderName dropbox' or myFolderName drop-box'
spaces are ok when making a 'drop box and ONLY when making a 'drop box'
folder...

the deadline for submissions (submission means posting to the list that you
have uploaded a piece into the Seven folder) is January 1st 2004

some technical guidelines:
- post only 128kbps/44.1kHz/stereo .mp3 files
- first make a folder within the "Uploads/Seven" folder and upload your
finished work there
- post to the list that you have uploaded your piece (include the name of
the piece)

please do the following when putting files on the server:
- use filetype suffixes in your filenames...such as "mynewpiece.mp3"
- do not use spaces or non-alphanumerics chars in filenames
- the use of underscores_in_filenames_are_ok
- example of bad filename: "#my, #new, #piece!.mp3"
- example of good filename: "myNewPiece_mynamehere.mp3"
(sans quotes of course)
this makes things more clear for everyone

***caveat: if you get the filename convention or the bit rate wrong I will
ask you to re-upload your piece using the proper filename convention and
correct bit rate...your piece will not be put on the web site until it is
corrected!

ALL styles of microsound are welcome...

PLEASE post all comments, suggestions and ideas *to the list* and NOT to me
directly...
