i often play perotin, a 12th century french composer from the ecole de notre
dame, for fans of experimental music, usually with good results.  he
composed with what i like to think of (jokingly, that is) as a
forward-thinking pre-electric time stretcher:  he slowed down gregorian
chant until each note took a minute or more, and then wrote intricate and
beautiful ornamentation over the top (often drawing comparison to middle
eastern music).  his work is truly stunning, and i highly recommend
particularly the release by the hilliard ensemble, entitled simply perotin.
very little of his work has been found, all through notre dame, and i
believe this cd might include all we've got.  the only other recording i've
found (although i haven't looked very hard) is by ensemble organum, which is
a very interesting contrast; much grittier, and perhaps more authentic, but
then again, we just don't know...
