[microsound] Re: microsound kiosk

At the risk of appearing to whine, when I have tried to initiate critical
discussions on this list in the past, I have mostly been greeted with only
mild interest combined with a chorus of anti-intellectual hostility.
One representative comment was that I was trying to impress my
girlfriend by using big words. In light of this, I've mostly
just gotten tired of making the effort. I don't think I'm better than
anyone else, but it's saddening to see that it is often quite difficult to
get people to think about what they're doing instead of just doing it.

As to solutions, I think the best one, rather than kicking people off the
list, is simply to try to initiate discussions and see what happens.
Failing that, perhaps a second list is necessary: a high-traffic promo
list and a lower-traffic critical list. rhizome and nettime have similar
setups.

PS. BTW, if people want to talk about software-/hardware-related
questions,
try signing up for my Experimental Music Technology list on freelists.org.
It's very dead right now, but if you sign up and start asking questions,
perhaps people will respond and get discussion going. I must confess that
part of the reason I started the experimustech list was to get some of
those kinds of postings off the microsound list and others like it, where
they didn't really seem to belong.

PPS. My article on the history and aesthetics of microsound has been
accepted for publication in a British journal called Organised Sound. I
will let the list know when it is actually published (scheduled for this
summer - August 2004), and may have proofs
for download in advance of the actual publication. Thanks again to
everyone who read and gave comments on earlier versions of this article.

have all the microsound philosophers been driven off the list

should I start booting people off the list who post promotional content

nothing else?

suggestions? ideas? topics?
