RE: [microsound] microsound kiosk laptops everywhere





the wealth of electronic music that is simply amazing. musicians creating and performing work that I have a wonderfully hard time categorizing (some tasks I leave up to wire magazine) more enjoyable to listen to. people playing instruments and singing instead of just staring at their laptops (though that has made some damn fine work this last year as well).

the laptop, more traditional instrument combo seemed to be more populare in 2003 than in other years to me too. with laptops poping up all over the pop, rock, jazz... music scenes. i think that this has more to do with technological trends than musical though. laptops are faster and more affordable. and there is a tone of software out there that new comers can make interesting noises with in a matter of hours. i think that 2003 was the true end of the novelty of laptop music. i no longer hear the hushed whispers of "cool there is a guy with a laptop in the band." at shows outside of the experimental music community. in 2002 even i still felt aware of this in music communities outside of the more "experimental." and i still had friends and acquaintances that were interested in how exactly i "made music" with a computer.
it has been interesting to see the number of artists that acknowldged the people behind the computer as having a partin creating the music and not just editing the music. performers like sting, edie brickle... have someone behind a laptop in their live shows now. i think, and i could be mistaken, that on the edie brickel cd their are even pictures of a person sitting behind an ibook in the band photos section of the cd liner notes. i am interested to see what effect this will have on the experimental laptop music community. will some of the better known names be asked to open for, or even perform with, as part of the band, bigger acts like sting?
has anyone though about trying out for being a bigger artists on tour/in studio laptop guy/gal?
