Re: [microsound] birdy

I would recommend using FM [Frequency Modulation] synthesis, as an
extremely wide range of sounds is possible with this technique.
FM synthesis was on of the first "truely digital" synthesis techniques.
It is simply not possible using analog equipment. The "guru" of FM
synthesis in the 70s was a man named John Chowning. Look for some of his
work, or anything written on him. I also recommend Curtis Roads'
"Computer Music Tutorial" or Charles Dodge's "Computer Music" for an
understanding of the technique.
Pure Data is excellent for this type of work, if you don't mind doing a
lot of patching [look in the documentation for the basic FM synthesis
tutorial patch]. It is also free + open source. Back in my
cracked-software days, I had a VSTi that emulated a Yamaha DX7, one of
the most popular commercial keyboards of the 80s, which was based
entirely on FM. This VSTi could load original DX7 patches, of which I
found many on the internet at the time. [Makes me wonder what I did with
them, and if they could be converted to PD patches... hmmmmm]
Good luck,
D.
