Re: [microsound] [OT] urination (eno/duchamp)
I'm not sure if it's JJ Xi and Yuan Cai, but rumor has it that when the
first "urination performance" targeting Duchamp's "Fountain" took place,
the paint on the surface of the urinal was partially washed away. Thus,
art critics commented, "Fountain" was not a ready made in the sense we
know; this was paradoxical and a great conceptual play by Duchamp, since
work was the very originator of the ready made. This was not the great
disillusionment however; aware of the potential danger of urination
performances, it turned out that the museum had kept the "original" urinal
in safety and exhibited a "clone". None of this is confirmed by anyone,
just a conceptual urban legend.
Serkan Ozkaya wrote a made up warning letter to the museum where
"Fountain" is exhibited, stating that he'd had a long and intense
discussion with an artist friend and that in spite of all his efforts to
convince him not to do it, this friend had got on his way to the museum in
an attempt to urinate into the work. "As an art lover who would hate such
a masterpiece to get damaged by such an inappropriate act", he begged the
"authorities" to prevent this vandal at any cost.
