Keep in mind that not only laws would have to change but people's
mentality as well.  Bach didn't copyright his works, yet he was
gainfully emplyed.  Some late 19th century composers still managed to
have a fairly good living despite of the fact that they were not
emplyed by anyone.  And they have produced some masterpieces as well
without the need of copyright.

But then and there, people had _respect_ for those who were creating
artworks.  

I am generalizing, I know.
