Many thanks to those who made useful suggestions. I hadn't thought about the 
idea of reversing headphones. I agree that it is important to inform people of 
what you are doing. Luckily many of the friends that I wish to record were 
friends of my son, originally,I think something along the lines of the hidden 
mic, revealed later, is the way to go; as most won't mind being put into some 
production that this silly old bugger is likely to make. Quite possibly there 
will be some credibility in spotting themselves helping to make a track. Anyway
