well, dodge & jerse _computer_music_ is a pretty important book to have.

at http://csounds.com/ dr. boulanger has his 'toots' which are a good
start. also, the most recent pd dist has a half finished tutorial by
frank b. which is good too. the pd website
[http://pure-data.sourceforge.net/] is also worth looking through.

to make sounds with these applications, you need to use their own unique
sound synthesis languages.
