[microsound] One -- A CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
One -- A CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
The experimental Music Collective (eMC) is planning an outdoor sound
installation in honour of the Dalai Lama's visit to Vancouver. The
90-minute event, entitled 'one', will take place on Tuesday 20 April
2004 from 11:00 am - 12:30 pm, in and around a cylindrical area adjacent
to the Xwi7xwa Library (First Nations House of Learning) at The
University of British Columbia. The installation will involve a collage
of Tibetan singing bowls with live processing and other electronics. The
official event description is:
Local musicians will create an outdoor sound installation in honour of
the Dalai Lama's visit. The aim is to fashion a sonic manifestation of
His Holiness's messages of peace, non-violence, inter-religious
understanding, compassion, and universal responsibility. In particular,
the project mirrors the topic of His keynote address: "Tibet in the
Contemporary World." Using both traditional and modern
instruments--Tibetan singing bowls and electronics--sound artists will
attempt to impart the relevance of His Holiness's spiritual teachings in
our modern world. The music will feature long transformations of
meditative tones, yielding a continuous, gradually evolving stream of
tranquillity. The slow-moving nature of the music will create an ideal
environment for meditation. Listeners will leave the environment
peaceful, focussed and energized.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS SOUND COLLAGE, please send an
audio CD with one track to the address shown below. (CDs will not be
returned, and we cannot accept emailed nor uploaded files.) We will
consider everything, but are most interested in long, slowly evolving
sonic gestures, as per the above description. Minimum duration: 1
minute; maximum duration: 1 hour. All CDs arriving on or before Monday
19 April will be considered.
