«For the Time Being» presents John Hudak in two rare live settings.
Better known for his shimmering, mesmerizing compositional work and
installations, live concert recordings of Hudak have been scarce in
recent years. The concert recordings on «For the Time Being» provide the
opportunity to hear Hudak in two different live improvisational contexts.
The first piece on the CD pairs Hudak with Jason Kahn, performing on the
occasion of Kahn’s sound installation «Winter» in the Diapason Gallery,
New York. Soundfiles from the installation (recordings of falling snow)
and field recordings made in Dobbs Ferry, New York, near John’s home
provide the working material for this concert.
The second piece features Hudak with Bruce Tovsky at the Roulette
Festival of Mixology in New York. For this performance both Hudak and
Tovsky process their guitar playing in real time with audio applications
designed in the Max MSP programming environment.

John Hudak
John Hudak has been interested in sound and music from the age of four
when he began playing the piano. At the University of Delaware (BA,
English 1981) and Naropa Institute for the Arts (1979) he studied video,
photography, creative writing and dance. He then began to create taped
soundtracks for his solo performance art pieces. In recent years, he has
concentrated on sound, particularly natural sounds.
Hudak’s current sound work focuses on the minimalism and repetition of
sounds below the usual threshold of hearing, sounds that are filtered
out or considered non-musical. These sounds are recorded, deconstructed
and processed, their rhythms and textures being the basis for aural
manipulations.

Bruce Tovsky
Bruce Tovsky began experimenting with tape recorders in grade school,
recording his friends as they cracked each other up. After abandoning
piano for guitar, he built his first synthesizer from a kit in high
school, and started playing his guitar through it.
He studied painting and printmaking at Herron School of Art in
Indianapolis, where he began integrating sound with visual works, and
continued this exploration in graduate school, earning his MFA in
multimedia from Rutgers University in 1979.
After many years of producing records, mixing live shows, scoring dance
works, and creating videos, he now concentrates on solo and small
ensemble improvised sound and video performances, and releases limited
edition CD and DVD works on his Skeleton imprint.

Jason Kahn
Jason Kahn’s audio work is a mix of electronic and acoustic sound
sources, produced with minimal percussion, laptop or analogue synthesizer.
In recent years he has also created several sound installations, using
field recordings and sound waves as concrete forms.
