PINHAS BIO
For a very special DC appearance at La Maison Francaise, French guitarist,
composer and electronic musician Richard Pinhas and laptop/ sample artist
Jerome Schmidt will perform an experimental mixture of guitar, electronics,
laptop, spoken word and video that fuses Pinhas' life-long studies of music,
philosophy, and French and American literature. Accompanied by Schmidt on
laptop, Pinhas will play electronically-modifed guitar, using the
"metatronic" method (a term he coined) that he developed after decades of
experiments with systems to integrate the guitar and electronics.

Pinhas' "metatronic" method distorts, digitally loops and extends his
guitar, creating rich soundscapes that evoke yet
stand distinct from Robert
Fripp's "Frippertronics" and his work with Brian Eno. Richard Pinhas is
internationally recognized as one of France's major experimental musicians:
the 'father' of French electronic music. He was the founder of Heldon, a
band whose violent fusion of electronics and guitar in the 1970s rivaled the
German electronic school and was a precursor to today's industrial music.

Over a music career spanning 3 decades, Pinhas has released more than 2
dozen critically acclaimed rock recordings (most resissued or released on
DC's Cuneiform label). He remains a vital and innovative force in rock
music today, touring and continuing to release innovative and acclaimed
music.

His new release on Cuneiform, called Tranzition, marks a progression in his
ongoing experiments with sound, his sonic collaborations with Schmidt, and
his experiments with spoken word (Philip K. Dick) for sonic texture.
Tranzition is a work of intense ambiance, an arresting and hypnotic sensory
assault that one critic called "a communion of grand sound."
