SoundWalk 2004
Groundbreaking Art Event Produced by Long Beach Artist
Group, FLOOD

This event, conceived of as SoundWalk, is a variation
on the concept of the usual "ArtWalk" events that
happen every 2nd Saturday in the Arts District. We
envision an environmental experience, which alters the
participants' perception of their sense of being in a
familiar space. Habituation blunts our
inquisitiveness, our engagement in the visual as well
as audible surroundings. Sound installations will
thus not only be an exciting moment of perception, but
a way of rethinking our sensory engagement with the
spaces in which we function.
In contrast to indoor art installations, which are
seen and experienced as separate from our daily
routines, we are visited with the expectation of the
extra-ordinary. Our sound-installations function in
concert with the sounds of the city, thus adding,
altering and intermingling with the customary. The
outdoor locations keep the ordinary din of the city in
the extra-ordinary event. The viewer may thus
perceive common occurrences in startling new ways.
We wish to surprise, puzzle, enchant, excite and
delight those who intentionally or unintentionally
participate in SoundWalk.
This event is free to the public and is being
sponsored by the Downtown Long Beach Associates
(DLBA), Gallery 33 East, 689 Design and the East
Village Association (EVA). A Catalog/CD about some of
the artists involved in this project will be available
for sale to the public during and after the event.
More information about FLOOD and the artists is
available upon request.
