Axel Doerner

Born in Köln, 26 April 1964; trumpet. 

Axel Dörner's first instrument was piano, which he
initially studied at the conservatory in Arnhem, the
Netherlands, from 1988 to 1989, and subsequently (1989
to 1996) at the Musikhochschule in Köln. From 1991 he
studied trumpet with Malte Burba at the
Musikhochschule. During the five years in Köln leading
up to 1994, he worked extensively with trumpeter Bruno
Leicht, as The Streetfighters Duo, The Streetfighters
Quartet (with Wayne Dockery and John Betsch), and The
Streetfighters Double Quartet with, among others,
Matthias Schubert and Claudio Puntin. During this time
he formed the Axel Dörner Quartet with Frank
Gratkowski, Hans Schneider and Martin Blume, and The
Remedy with Sebastian Gramss and Claus Wagner (and
guests Peter Kowald, Tom Cora and Matthias Schubert).
Numerous radio, television and concert appearances
were made with these groups. 

In 1994, Dörner moved to Berlin and the number of
activities increased substantially to include: 

Die Enttäuschung with Rudi Mahall, Uli Jennessen and
Jan Roder; and, with Alexander von Schlippenbach added
to the quartet in a group that has performed all the
compositions of Thelonius Monk

Bernhard Gal   (a.k.a. gal)

Composer / Artist / Musicologist

Born 1971 in Vienna, Austria.

 

Since 1986 intensification of musical activities and
studies of various compositional techniques. After
studies at Vienna?s University of Music (Sound
engineering) and the University of Vienna (Musicology)
emphasis on compositional and artistic activities.
1997-98 year-long residency in New York City. Since
1998 Gal works as a freelance composer and artist.
Currently Gál lives and works in Berlin and Vienna. 

 

Creation of electro-acoustic and electronic music as
well as music for acoustic instruments, also
integrating spatial and performative elements into his
work. As a (sound-) artist Gál combines sound, light,
objects, video projections and spatial concepts as
equal parts of his inter-media installations. As a
(powerbook) musician, Gál has performed in solo
concerts and collaborated with Aki Onda, Alan Licht,
Brian Labycz, Chao-Ming Tung, Kai Fagaschinski, Manuel
Mota, et al. 

 

Concerts, exhibitions, sound installations and
intermedia art projects throughout Europe, and in
Japan, Taiwan and the Americas (e.g. Konzerthaus Wien,
Museum Essl Austria, singuhr-hoergalerie Berlin,
University of the Arts Berlin, Podewil Berlin,
Institut Mathildenhoehe Darmstadt, Studio Five Beekman
New York, GAle GAtes Gallery New York, Tonic New
York). Invitations to festivals (e.g. Wien Modern,
ICMC Berlin, MaerzMusik Berlin, Cinema for the Ear
-Festival Copenhagen, Musashino Public Art Festival
Tokyo, MATA Festival New York). 

 

Collaborations with architects, choreographers,
musicians, painters, performance-, media- and video
artists, e.g. G.S. Sedlak, Mandy Morrison, Christian
Aichinger, P. Michael Schultes, Akemi Takeya and Emre
Tuncer. Since 1997 ongoing collaboration with the
Japanese architect/artist Yumi Kori
(?audio-architectural installations?). Compositions
for video, dance, theatre and radio art projects.

Recipient of various awards and grants, e.g.
Composition Award of Initiative Minderheiten Vienna
2000, Karl Hofer-Prize/University of the Arts Berlin
2001, SKE-Fonds Annual Grant Vienna 2002, DAAD
Artist-in-Residency Berlin 2003, Austrian State
Scholarship for Composition 2004.

 

Several CD-Releases, e.g. on Durian (A), Plate Lunch
(GER), Intransitive Recordings (USA), Klanggalerie
(A), contributions to various compilations.
