Yes, and no. Yes, it´s being done but in small numbers, both in edition size
and the amount of releases, at least compared to dance. The problem on one
side is getting it to the right customers since the normal (dance) channels
don´t seem to work that well, on the other side it´s n ot that easy to find
the releases that are being done. To be honest, here in the Netherlands i
only know V2 as a place where I can walk in and trade cash for desireable
records straight forwardly. Call me oldfashioned but i prefer to hold
something in my hands for a few seconds before deciding to pay. You might
get lucky in "alternative" shops and perhaps in a "experimental" section
next to the minimal techno in the average dance shop.
I might be wrong, but personally I see a gradual increase in popularity of
soundtracks on vinyl, perhaps experimental stuff could piggyback on that
wave?
Those are just my observations, I buy, make and release experimental stuff
and am closely involved with how our own "Creme" label (which does disco and
electro too) is managed but the desisions there aren´t mine. That is to say;
I´m interested and somewhat informed but not a expert.
If anyone desires to get some nice minimal experimental stuff on vinyl right
now I´d like to take this chance to advice the "City without windows" OST by
David Kristian which we released on 12". It´s a very minimal introverted
thing with fragile tones and a lot of cracles that I personally love to
pieces. After I discovered it wasn´t released yet I simply kept bugging both
David and my label manager untill they caved in and went for it. For
statistics´s sake; I think we pressed 800 or so copies, nobody is sure how
that will sell but it´s good and we figured there must always be a market
for good stuff.
David made a page for it here; http://www.davidkristian.com/city.htm which
also features a very interesting article on the sound design. I think it´s
well worth your cash and attention if you are interested in experimental
stuff on vinyl.
Yours,
Kas.
