That realy depends, for simple things I like getting down to the logic gates
and flipflops and so on. At least with those you know for sure what is going
to happen; there won´t be any hidden bugs and it´s not going to suddenly
crash for undocumented reasons. Well, provided you make sure the synth and
the panel of logic gates share the same ground....

Amusingly;  I once toyed with a pannel of voltage based logic gates that
included a 4bit DAC. With those you can be post-digital and completely
analog at the same time! Who could resist?
