i'm not sure i get this reply... and how it contributes to the discussion on the list. It sounds like someone with issues...


the material i posted was a report from someone else (earlier in the thread) who is running real time chat for a list not dissimilar to this. His observation was that most people do not like real time chat, or at least are reluctant to take the interactions from these spaces into that context. Real time chat appeals to stronger personalities and not to all. Your surprise at the small number of participants in your irc channel is therefore not a surprise for others who have tried a similar thing... there are also quite pragmatic issues like time zones etc... It is also possible that people do not want to interact in real time and their reticence is not a case of being too lazy to participate. The material I have contributed to this thread is in an attempt to get people to consider the experiences of others who have gone down these paths, rather than behave as if they know it all, or that the experiences of others are irrelevant.

or indeed taking up list bandwidth with obtuse in-jokes which make sense to the poster but to no one else.
