to piggyback, i've always heard the same ike turner story as the birth of distortion...

this supports the idea of the accidental. but to take it a step further, didn't the lack of  technology in the earlier years of recorded music lend itself to the first "glitches?" certainly they weren't used as such, but they were accounted for in terms of eq and mic placement to make these problems more musical. just a thought.
