actually. shanghai is way backward for ALL music.
for some reason, people who live outside china think
shanghai is the "scene" for everything.
but in fact, beijing is the place for music, art,
film, etc...
one site to check out for beijing music events is

its an english-language rundown of some of the more
experimental shows in town, with a focus on post-rock,
punk and electronic.
there are regular underground electronic shows in
beijing. every tuesday at a former drive-in movie
theatre there are shows featuring avant-garde
electronics and free improve stuff. and the weekends
are packed out with shows...

which is an english expat mag run by some friends of
mine. they have so-so listings for events. mostly the
mainstream club and rock stuff.
of course, all the good stuff is in chinese, so if
your friend can read chinese, there are a lot more
places i could direct him to check out...
ive lived in china for two decades and played hundreds
of shows there. but unfortunately im on tour in
germany when your friend is in town, so cant help show
him around...
