synaesthesia is a very fascinating -- but also very specific --
phenomenon that i don't think should be muddied in order to make
someone's A/V show seem cooler than it may otherwise be.

what can you muddy, if not a phenomenon?

you're right though, the word was rattling around in my head because it
was on a flyer i recently saw. more accurately, most vj's i've seen
seem to be angling to create a visual analogy to music. more often than
not, they seem to be drawn to beat first.

probably the best a/v work i've ever seen was at terrastock in S.F.:

two guys, who aren't mentioned on that site, mixed live for every band
that played for all three days. staggering and beautiful as i recall.
another local favorite is the recent a/v work by artist gary panter:

he makes his own noisey cassettes, and does a classic psychedelic light
show along with them, with great results. hopefully he'll put out a dvd
soon.
