Re: [microsound] Sakamoto/Nicholai

Very short review of the London Gig I posted to my personal blog couple of
weeks ago -

The stage at the Barbican was empty except for a grand piano and a stand with
two powerbooks, the backdrop consisted of what looked like roughly 4:1 aspect
ratio screen at about head height.

I've been a huge Sakamoto fan, and he's a huge influence on my dr0ne stuff.
Amongst my favourites would be his Anger/Grief EP, and World Citizen.
Tonight's performance was a very strange one - considering I was expecting
something more piano driven score recitals then I was a performance that would
have been equally at home on Ad Noiseam.

1.5 hours of nice deep sub-lows rattling the barbican, at times sakamoto's
piano skirting around the almost dubby bass. Other times the piano's is
drenched in reverb, filter sweeps. About 5 pieces in a driving piano drones
away in the lower octaves while digital noise builds from a glitch to a
throbbing homeage to power electronics.

The visuals were alright - at times taking cues fm the music, other times
played live. Some of the visuals were more effective than others. Sometimes
the visuals broke down into a cthugha rip-off.

My main complaint about the night is that with all the dsp audio, glitching,
and hte live piano I really could have done without the visuals. At times the
sound was stripped down to such minimal form - I would have preferred to have
had my eyes shut, rather than having to gain some value out of the visuals. My
other complaint was that at some points the Barbican sound system had trouble
really reaching down into those low-low-low-sub-los.
