[microsound] Port of Call - Transmission VOIP project

Port of Call

In this age of 'on-time delivery' I am working on a
project that intersects and extends the problematics
of global transfer.

The idea is for a live multi-player , multi-location
performance to occur over VOIP, which addresses data
transfer at the point of individual expressive and
interpertative possibilities.

Participants in the concert would be from different
parts of the world, all playing togethor, live.
Listening and a kind of conversation are sought,
rather then becoming dominated by over-playing by any
one player.

Artistically, each player would bring to the piece
unique works, either which deal with the idea and
experience of actual place or which somehow express
their particiular location, at that time, in some
mode. In this way, a kind of conversation would occur.
Beyond the conversational inter-change, a shifting
landscape of sounds would be occuring.

To provide a kind of minimal structure, a pentatonic
scale would form the root, so to speak. It would be
stretched over the whole time of the performance (not
neccesarily playing in the background, but known to
all participants as the general frame of events). So
(if it was C, D, E, G, A), for the first 20 minutes or
so, all 'communications' would be related (either
harmonically or dissonantly) to C. In other words,
sounds performed would be in some way related to the
scale 'place' for that time phase. This relation does
not mean adherence. It simply means providing a kind
of collective knowledge of a certain basic
event-passage occuring over a certain time. It becomes
in that way, a space to return to or play off, etc. in
the interchange of players occuring in time.

There is more to discuss in terms of it.
The basic phases of developing this project are.

Phase 1:
Participants in this VOIP concert
*** If there are enough people who are interested,
then proposing this project for hosting possibilities
via an experminental outlet, or art
space/institution/organization ***

Phase 2:
Further development

Phase 3:
Practice Run

Phase 4:
Performance in early winter of 2005

Write me if you're interested in some aspect of it, or
with any comments, etc.

Best,
-Andrew Fremont-Smith
