[microsound] tablet2midi

Hi

Sorry if this has been discussed before, I've only recently re-subscribed to
the list (a bit surprised that almost all the talk has been of a techie
nature, but so is mine ;)

Has anyone tried to the tablet2midi program? From what I can see you can
draw your own controllers on paper/screen, print it off, lay it over a
graphics tablet and use it as a midi controller...I don't have a tablet as
yet, but would be interested to hear from anyone who's tried the program.
Can anyone also recommend a budget tablet?

*windows only by the way*

(From the site)"Tablet 2 Midi is a standalone windows application that allow
you to use your graphics tablet / tablet PC / digitizer as a set of MIDI
controllers. You can add an unlimited number of controllers, by defining an
area of the tablet surface as a button, a slider or an XY-pad.

The idea is that you print out the controller layout and put it directly on
the tablet surface. This way you can set controller values simply by
pointing on the tablet and moving the pen - this means you can avoid

    * looking at the screen - look at the audience instead
    * locating the mouse cursor

plus you get pressure / tilt / rotation that can be mapped to any MIDI
Continous Controller.

Another benefit is that using a pressure sensitive pen is a very intuitive
way of controlling multiple parameters at once using XY controllers. The
classis example is to play a theramin VSTi: you can control both pitch,
amplitude and filter simultaniously (the final version will support tilt and
rotation for even more parameters). Textures / drones and pads are handy to
control with XY pads too.

Experimantalists will appreciate the Free form controllers - these are
defined by hand-drawing two lines of any shape. Proximity to the first line
creates low values, the other creates high values. Freeform controllers can
be circular, curved, triangular, you name it! "
