This may sound trivial, but a lot depends on your choice of OS: 

If you want to use OS-X, buy a Mac. If you want to use Windows, buy a
PC. If you want to use Linux, a PC laptop will give more bang for the
buck. 

I use a MSI S260 notebook with Linux which has the same price as an
iBook, looks good (important on stage!) but has much better specs (in
areas like higher resolution screen, faster CPU, more RAM, bigger and
better HD, while other areas like size, weight, battery life are
basically the same) and thus delivers much superior performance
compared to the Mac laptop.  But then I don't care about OS-X, and I
don't even think about Windows.
