[microsound] wireless outdoor speakers

I'm fishing for advice/expertise with setting up speakers in an outdoor, or at least impromptu location, wirelessly (both without audio and power cables). This would need to involve some combination of wireless transmitters, receivers, battery powered amps or speakers, and possibly appropriate housings to keep all of this equipment safe and portable. There are, of course, massively expensive systems available out of the box, but I'm shooting for something more modular and, well, cheap. Anyone have any experience with this kind of setup?

The wonderful portability of the laptop-as-instrument is somewhat thwarted by the amount of extra shit that has to go into getting it to make so much as a peep. Has anyone done any (un)successful experiments with this kind of impromptu performance in an unprepared location?
