but there is a tacit assumption that the noises being listened to are communicating something, surely? listening to a foreign tongue being spoken i don't understand the content but i understand that communication is happening. in music, especially with free/noise music, it is sometimes the act of communication itself that is being directly interrogated. even when this is not the case, communication simply as some kind of exchange (even if the exchange involves bemusement on the non-performing end), divorced from preconceived ideas of what is 'music' or what is 'communication', is a feature of music.


but fulfilling a market niche is noy what motivates
the most interesting art.
