Re: [microsound] music is the ultimate incorruptible
i disagree.
1 - music is not a belief system, except inasmuch as a composer may
believe that what he/she has created has some degree of beauty or ugliness
in it. There are no morals attached to music, there are no ethics in the
creation of sound. Music is amoral. Often there isn't intention behind it
either. its simply an exploration of the sensation of hearing.
2 - music is completely corruptible, as is evidenced by the scores of
people who use it to serve their political/spiritual/commercial agenda(s).
One example (by no means the only one)-- Ronald Reagan, noted american war
hawk, uses "Born in the USA" as a campaign slogan when the stated meaning
behind the song is anti-war.
That being said, the act of creating music can be spiritual, just not by
definition. Trying to assign such a level of meaning to music merely
saddles it with unneccessary responsibilities and turns it into yet
another religion to be fanaticized and fundamentalized. Don't you think
there's enough of that as it is?
