acousmatic comes from the academic electroacoustic tradition - it means,
roughly, sound perceptually disconnected from its cause. as in, if i hit a
drum, then play back a recording of the drum through loudspeakers, even
though the sound you hear in both cases is 'the same' (for given values of
'same'), when you experience it through the speakers you are experiencing
it acousmatically.
possibly comes from Pythagoras (yes, Greek mathematician Pythagoras) who
used to give lectures from behind a curtain so that his students wouldn't
get distracted by the visual component of someone talking...
