Overcoming Tourism by Hakim Bey (aka Peter Wilson) is a very 
interesting essay on tourism vs pilgrimage...

"The tourist consumes difference."

I concur with Kim -- immersion in alternate realities is one of the 
few hopes for transformative be-ing.  maybe it comes down to the idea 
that when the Self changes, the world changes...
