Re: [microsound] strategic alliance

I would be more excited if Cycling 74 were not so Mac-centric ... I've
had problems with their software under WinXP, with the paid-for
version FYI. For instance, it was not possible to get a simple $25
webcam to run with Jitter, whereas PureData had no problem utilizing
the same webcam in WinXP. The reason is an over-reliance on QuickTime
even after porting to Windows, it's basically a bad port.

And as for why I run WinXP, it's not that I like M$, but I can't
afford the alternative (I will now be looking at dual-boot Linux
system). Concretely, that means I'm buying an ultra-cheapo laptop
Friday, at far below the cost of any comparable Mac laptop. Of course,
it's annoying because I now have to uninstall Vista before I do
anything else, but ah well. That pain will probably pale quickly,
compared to what I go through on my first attempt to recompile the
Linux kernel... ;-)

On the other hand, if Jitter worked better with Win it could be really
cool. I also wonder about getting an older Mac laptop, I just don't
know enough to know what I should get, and what it would be able to
run.

Personally though, I'm hoping that some of the "pluggo4PD" ideas that
people are talking about get realized, because PD in Ableton would be
sweet. Even sweeter would be to get a non-commercial environment that
is good enough, that I can ditch Ableton all together for live techno.

Who else is eager for this partnership to produce results? Also, what
do you think they could have in the pipeline? I am overly excited.
