The shepards ascending tones: I was hoping for something like a 
barberpole flange. Those are sometimes very effective. There's a tune 
by Bad Company (the drum and bass one, not the rock group ) that 
features such a sound at the start. It seems to go up and up yet never 
runs out of energy, quite amazing. Also, of course the very beginning 
of Running With The Devil by Van Halen ( descending and presumably 
guitars).
