you can also use programs like soundtracker (linux only, i think) that
will convert any file to audio using whatever parameters you choose for
samplerate, bit depth etc. gives you a little more control ever the
conversion process then cat foo > /dev/dsp
perl is/was used in many live-coding performances, fwiw:
