As with any tool or manufacturing process, you can do creative work
that would have been unobtainable without it or you can produce work
to a significantly lower standard. Both are quite possible and
mediocrity is the most probably.
Maybe I'm in the minority here but I've been very inspired by Isao
Tomita and Wendy Carlos over the years from the standpoint of being
fascinated by orchestral music that does not sound "real" at all. My
interest is in artistic input that goes far beyond either the
mechanics of trying to "fool" people or works done primarily as
experiments (what if I processed x with y?). I see this whole area
interestingly analogous to animation rather than the more obvious
comparison to programming.
It's interesting to to hear the effect of "better" tools if you can
compare works by the same person before and after more tools. While
enabling they quite often seem to make some or many differences
disappear. Maybe that's the key. Many artists don't realize that
until much later.
